Finland has launched an investigation into a man who crossed the border into Russia illegally — Yle

In the Finnish region of North Karelia, law enforcement authorities have launched an official investigation into an illegal border crossing

A local resident crossed the border into the Russian Federation and then returned to Finnish territory

The individual has been detained by border patrols, and the detailed circumstances and motives behind the incident are being investigated by law enforcement agencies in both countries.

The incident occurred on Saturday near the border town of Tohma-Järvi.

The detainee was a middle-aged Finnish citizen who bypassed the current restrictions and checkpoints.

Since the land border between the countries is currently closed, Finnish officials have already contacted representatives of the Russian side to clarify all the circumstances of the offense.

During a preliminary inspection of the area, specialists determined the exact route taken by the detained man.

The violator crossed the border through a special gate for animals, which is left open in the barrier fence to allow wild animals to move freely.

Typically, such technical passages in protective engineering structures are kept open at all times.

The Finnish Border Guard is currently refraining from making official comments regarding the detainee’s possible motives.

At the same time, agency officials note that the Finnish citizen’s actions may have been unintentional due to inattention or disorientation.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the duration of his stay in the neighboring country and to check for possible accomplices.

This was reported by the Finnish broadcaster Yle.

Two drones, believed to belong to Ukraine, crashed on Finnish territory.

Ukrainian drones were in no way directed toward Finland, the Foreign Ministry stated. Kyiv has already provided the Finnish side with all necessary information to clarify the circumstances of the UAV crash and apologized for the incident. This was reported by Georgiy Tykhyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
