A film about the high-profile Louvre heist will be made in France

A feature film is in the works in France about one of the most high-profile museum heists in recent years—the theft of jewels from the Louvre. The events, which took place in 2025, will form the basis of a film about the disappearance of exhibits worth over $100 million. The investigation into the crime is still ongoing, and the jewels have yet to be found.

France has decided to adapt one of the most high-profile criminal stories of recent years for the screen—the notorious Louvre heist, during which jewels from the collections of Napoleon and the French monarchs disappeared from the museum. Director Romain Gavras, known for the film *Athena* and music videos for JAY-Z, is working on the project. His new film will be a fictionalized retelling of the events of October 2025, when nine unique artifacts disappeared from one of the Louvre’s most secure galleries.

The screenplay will be based on a journalistic investigation and the book *The Louvre Heist*, which was written by journalists from the French publications *Le Parisien*, *Le Monde*, and *Paris Match*. The publishers note that interest in the story was so great that the film rights were purchased even before the book’s official release. “Interest in this story was so high that the production company acquired the rights even before the book was released,” according to a statement from the publisher Flammarion.

The events that will form the basis of the film took place on October 19, 2025, in the Apollo Gallery—one of the museum’s most heavily secured areas. According to the investigation, the criminals struck during the day and infiltrated the Louvre disguised as technical staff. They used a stolen lift to gain access to the exhibition and made off with nine valuable items worth a total of over $100 million. During their escape, one of the pieces—Empress Eugénie’s crown—was lost and later found near the museum.

Despite the police’s swift response and the arrest of five suspects, the investigation remains ongoing. The jewels stolen from the Louvre have been missing for over seven months.

In addition to a feature film, a British producer has also acquired the rights to a documentary series about the case, reflecting the international audience’s keen interest in one of the most mysterious museum heists of our time. Hypebeast reports this.
