At least 93 houses collapsed in the North East Gonja district of Ghana as a result of heavy rains and flooding. More than 246 residents were left without housing, MyJoyOnline reports.
Food supplies and livestock destroyed
The flooding also destroyed local residents’ food supplies, agricultural produce and livestock. According to Ghana’s National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), the flooding occurred after continuous rainfall that began on Wednesday.
Mahama Zakaria, the Savannah Region director of NADMO, inspected the affected communities. He said the scale of the destruction had already been documented and reports had been sent to the organization’s central office. Aid for those affected may arrive within 48 hours.

One resident, Lakman Musah, said the water destroyed his soybean, maize and rice stocks, as well as his livestock. He called on the authorities and other organizations to provide urgent support to families that lost their homes, food and sources of income.
Damaged road cut off communities
Water flows washed away a section of a local road that connected the affected settlements to the market. As a result, Lantung Park, Kedingi and Kanankula, among others, were cut off from surrounding areas.
North East Gonja District Chief Executive Abdul Mumin Ewuntoma confirmed the collapse of about 93 structures. According to him, residents of the outskirts of Bimbila, who use this road for trade and trips to the market, also lost access to the route. The official called on national security authorities, the minister of roads and highways, and the Department of Feeder Roads to treat the road damage as an emergency.
