In Ghana, committee chair reveals origin of 24-hour economy program
In Ghana, the government’s 24-hour economy program was developed on the basis of the country’s 48-year development plan, said Nii Moi Thompson, chair of the National Development Planning Committee (NDPC). According to him, the program became one of the few key initiatives originating from the long-term document.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Thompson said this during PM Express on Joy FM. He noted that the 48-year development plan was supposed to receive full legislative approval, but this did not happen. At the same time, the government and the NDC took the idea of a 24-hour economy from the plan.
Initiatives from the development plan
The NDPC chair also linked the name of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation to the 48-year plan. He named the Ghana Agency for Development Cooperation as another initiative.

According to Thompson, the agency is currently being developed by the NDPC together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He said that this structure should help strengthen Ghana’s soft power and its international ties.
Investment and small business
Assessing the implementation of the 24-hour economy program, Thompson said its developers had made progress in working with businesses of different sizes. According to him, a number of investments have been prepared for the program, but large businesses need time before such investments begin to produce results.
In Thompson’s view, over the next two years the program should focus more on small and medium-sized enterprises. He also stressed that job creation, tackling underemployment, and improving the quality of existing jobs should remain important components.
