In Ghana, NDC Chairman Nketia links his path to Nkrumah’s policies — MyJoyOnline
In Nkroful, in Ghana’s Western Region, National Democratic Congress National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia said that his political path and current position were made possible by the free education policy introduced by the country’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah. He said this during NkrumahFest 2026, MyJoyOnline reports.
Education instead of family plans
According to Nketia, this policy enabled him to receive a formal education, although his family had other plans for his future. He described himself as an unwavering supporter of Nkrumah’s ideas, in particular because of the former president’s policies’ personal impact on his life.
Nketia said that in childhood, representatives of the Young Pioneers took him off the street in Seikwa while other children were attending school. He was later sent to relatives, who were told that after the introduction of free compulsory universal basic education, parents had to send a child to school or could face persecution.

Nkrumah’s legacy
According to the NDC chairman, his relatives wanted to keep him at home so that he would inherit the family’s royal duties and cocoa farm. Nketia said that this experience strengthened his desire to study Nkrumah’s works and help preserve his legacy.
NkrumahFest 2026 is being held in Nkroful to mark the 117th birthday of Kwame Nkrumah. According to Nketia, the festival gives Ghanaians an opportunity to reflect on the former president’s contribution and the need to preserve his legacy.
