In Ghana, youth group demands faster investigation into violence in Nyankpala — MyJoyOnline

In Nyankpala, in the Tolon District of Ghana’s Northern Region, a group of concerned residents submitted a petition to state authorities asking them to speed up the investigation into violence during the December 7, 2024 elections. The incident killed Shaibu Haruna, known as Alhaji, and injured several other people.

As MyJoyOnline reports, Alhassan Alhassan, a representative of the Concerned NDC Youth in the Nyankpala Zone group, said that the Ghana Police Service had reported an ongoing investigation and that authorities had engaged with stakeholders after the incident. At the same time, the group is concerned about the pace of the investigation.

Concerns about evidence and witnesses

According to the representative, nearly two years after the event, concerns have arisen about the preservation of evidence, the availability of witnesses, and how accurately they will remember the circumstances. He stated that the investigation must receive the necessary attention and resources so that investigators can verify credible leads and establish the circumstances of the case.

Alhassan also mentioned the Government Accountability Series briefing of August 24, 2026. During it, Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka spoke about efforts to locate suspects connected to the case. The group’s spokesperson expressed doubt that the description of one of the suspects made public at that time corresponds to the information available to the group, and called for it to be checked against official records and, if necessary, for a public clarification to be provided.

Seven requests in the petition

In its appeal, the group asks for the investigation to be expedited, investigators to be provided with the necessary support, and the description of the suspect voiced in August to be verified. Other requests include providing the affected family with appropriate updates without disclosing sensitive information, protecting witnesses from intimidation or retaliation, responding to credible evidence, and replying to the petition in writing within 30 days.

Alhassan stated that the group does not seek to interfere in the work of investigators or courts, but demands a credible process for establishing the facts. He also stressed that the law should be applied to anyone suspected of involvement.

The petition was addressed to the President of Ghana, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ghana Police Service, the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice, as well as other relevant institutions. The Tolon District Chief Executive was asked to forward the document to the appropriate recipients.
