In Ghana, student completes medical education thanks to scholarship — MyJoyOnline
In Ghana, Mariam Abubakar from the city of Wenchi completed a six-year medical training programme at the University of Cape Coast after receiving the MTN Bright Scholarship. Due to financial difficulties, her family had previously considered postponing her studies in the medical programme and choosing a less costly profession.
As MyJoyOnline reports, Abubakar enrolled in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme, but the cost of education became a significant burden for her family. The student began looking for scholarship programmes to continue her studies and was eventually selected for the MTN Bright Scholarship programme.
Honours after completing her studies
In 2025, Mariam Abubakar qualified as a doctor. She received honours as the best student in surgery and family medicine, as well as the Emeritus Professor E. E. Brako Prize for the best student in microbiology.
In mid-April 2026, she began her internship at Holy Family Hospital as a Junior House Officer. Abubakar linked her ability to continue her studies and begin a medical career to the scholarship she received.

Student support programme
The MTN Bright Scholarship was established in 2017 for the 20th anniversary of MTN Ghana. The programme is designed to support talented students facing financial difficulties while pursuing higher education.
According to MTN Ghana, 1,220 students from 18 higher education institutions in the country have benefited from the programme, including the University of Cape Coast, the University of Ghana, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, colleges of education, and institutions training healthcare workers. The scholarship covers tuition and accommodation, a laptop, and funds for books and other learning materials.
The company also stated that 17 scholarship recipients completed their studies as best students or valedictorians. Another 299 programme participants earned first-class honours degrees, 47 earned upper second-class honours, and 16 earned lower second-class honours.
