Iceland's Prime Minister called Trump's map an insult to three nations
Icelandic Prime Minister Kristunn Frostadóttir criticized Donald Trump for posting a map showing the U.S. flag covering Iceland, Greenland, and Canada.
On September 7, the U.S. president posted the map on Truth Social without any explanation.
“In my opinion, the underlying message there is absurd. Such a statement is an insult to Icelanders, Canadians, and Greenlanders,” Frostadottir said.
She emphasized that the sovereignty of nations should not be mocked, especially when it is not guaranteed.
At the same time, the prime minister noted that Iceland currently has no issues in its relations with the U.S., but such statements by the American president should be taken seriously.

On August 29, 2026, a referendum began in Iceland on resuming negotiations for the country’s accession to the European Union. Approximately 273,000 voters are to answer “yes” or “no” to the question of whether Iceland should resume negotiations on joining the EU.
A majority of voters in Iceland rejected the continuation of negotiations on the country’s accession to the European Union. 52.8% voted against resuming negotiations, while 47.2% supported the idea. Voter turnout exceeded 80%.
