ByteDance Is Developing AI to Create Virtual Worlds — Bloomberg
ByteDance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, is working on a new artificial intelligence model—the so-called “world model.” It is designed to create interactive virtual worlds.
These are so-called “world models”—artificial intelligence systems designed not only to generate images or videos, but also to simulate the surrounding environment, its objects, and the interactions between them.
ByteDance is using the technology behind its Seedance video model to develop this new technology. It is designed to generate spatial environments that will change based on the user’s actions.
Specifically, users will be able to interact with the AI-generated world using voice commands. The technology is planned for use in video games, live streams, and short-form series.
The development may also be linked to Pico VR headsets, which are owned by ByteDance. The company is considering moving some of the processing to the cloud to reduce the power requirements of the devices themselves.
A team led by ByteDance founder Zhang Yiming is working on the project. The company is also allocating additional resources to this initiative.
ByteDance is joining the competition in the field of world models, which is being developed by companies such as Google and Meta. In the future, such technologies could be used not only for entertainment but also in robotics, autonomous transportation, and other systems that require modeling the real world.
ByteDance is expected to unveil the new technology as early as October, though the final launch dates are subject to change.
