Greece Reports Improvement in the Forest Fire Situation in Attica — Ekathimerini
On Monday, August 3, 2026, the situation with the large-scale wildfire in the Attica region of Greece had stabilized somewhat. At the same time, firefighters continue to battle the blaze in several areas due to intense flames and challenging conditions.
Fire department spokesperson Ioannis Artopios reported that the situation had improved in Psati, a coastal area on the shores of the Gulf of Corinth, as well as along the northern and northeastern fronts of the fire toward the village of Vilia, northwest of Athens.
However, authorities warned that it is too early to let down our guard: hundreds of firefighters remain on the ground, and dozens of aircraft are providing aerial support.
Overnight, an emergency alert was issued via the 112 hotline ordering the evacuation of residents of Agia Skepi, Kandili, and Botsiki toward Nea Peramos—a coastal town west of Athens. Fire crews worked through the night, using heavy equipment to create firebreaks and slow the spread of the flames.
The firefighting operation was overshadowed by the deaths on Sunday of two crew members following a mid-air collision between two Bell-type firefighting helicopters that were participating in efforts to extinguish a forest fire near Psati. A preliminary investigation into the causes of the accident has been entrusted to the Greek police.
Significant damage has been reported in Porto Germeno, a coastal village in western Attica, where homes and other property were destroyed.
