Georgia is investigating a disinformation campaign regarding attitudes toward Russian tourists
Georgia’s State Security Service has opened a criminal investigation under the sabotage statute in connection with a large-scale disinformation campaign targeting Russian tourists. According to investigators, false reports were circulated on social media alleging hostile behavior by Georgian residents toward Russian citizens.
Law enforcement officials believe the fake posts were published through a network of bot accounts coordinated from abroad. These posts claimed that Georgian tour guides were deliberately leaving Russian tourists in the woods, and that restaurant staff were spoiling their food.
According to Georgian intelligence agencies, these posts were later picked up by a major foreign online publication with an audience of millions. Local media also report that screenshots of such posts were circulated by Telegram channels linked to Russian security agencies.
Investigators are currently identifying the organizers of the disinformation campaign, its possible sponsors, and the sources of funding for the spread of these falsehoods.
