Video: Man Arrested in Georgia for Attempting to Sell Uranium for $700,000 — Reuters
The Georgian State Security Service has detained a Georgian citizen who, according to the investigation, planned to sell uranium-238 to a foreign national for $700,000. The man is charged with illegal handling of nuclear materials. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison.
Security agencies released a video showing the man being pulled out of a white sedan and handcuffed. The footage shows operatives inspecting two small containers in the car’s trunk using a portable radiation detector.
Uranium-238 is the most common isotope of uranium. Although it is radioactive, it generally cannot be used on its own to build a nuclear bomb.
Over the past few decades, Georgia has experienced several serious incidents involving the illicit trafficking of nuclear materials.
In February, two people were detained in Georgia while attempting to purchase $3 million worth of uranium, as well as a shipment of a radioactive isotope used in nuclear weapons testing programs.
