Canadian lawmaker says he was removed after vote on arms exports — Anadolu Agency

In Canada, ruling Liberal Party lawmaker Sean Casey said he was removed from his position as parliamentary secretary to the minister of veterans affairs after supporting a bill to strengthen controls over arms exports. Casey represents Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, in the House of Commons of Canada.

Vote on the bill

As reported by Anadolu Agency, in March the Liberal Party whip warned Casey that supporting an initiative by New Democratic Party lawmaker Jenny Kwan would result in his dismissal from the position.

The bill was intended to close loopholes allowing Canadian-made military equipment to be sold to other countries, from where it could subsequently reach Israel. Casey explained that he voted for the document because of concerns expressed by voters in his constituency. The bill was not passed by the House of Commons.

Replacement in the position

According to Casey, the bill was supported by 15 Liberal lawmakers, but only he held the position of parliamentary secretary. He said that he learned of his removal during a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister's Office on Thursday. The next day, Quebec lawmaker Sophie Chatel was named as his successor.

Jenny Kwan called the situation troubling and said it raises doubts about whether Liberal Party lawmakers can vote in accordance with the wishes of their constituents.
