According to the investigation, the perpetrators illegally installed cameras in hotel rooms and received photos and videos of guests via hotel staff. These materials were then sent abroad for blackmail purposes. Victims received screenshots of intimate videos threatening their public release, sparking serious public outrage.
The probe revealed the full criminal scheme – from modifying cameras into hidden devices and installing them in rooms to obtaining personal data and extorting money from victims. This case highlights an increasing threat to digital security in the hotel sector.
Earlier, the British broadcaster BBC uncovered thousands of videos shot by hidden cameras in Chinese hotel rooms being sold for cryptocurrency, revealing the systemic nature and extent of the crime.
The exposed criminal system has prompted calls for tighter security controls in hospitality venues and better protection of personal data. Authorities are expected to strengthen measures to prevent such violations in the future.
Stricter regulations and enhanced monitoring systems are anticipated soon to eliminate this dangerous practice entirely.
