Swimming restricted in Latvia’s Lake Saldus due to E. coli
Latvia’s Health Inspectorate has introduced swimming restrictions in the recreation area at Lake Saldus. An additional water sample taken on August 31 once again showed elevated levels of microbiological pollution associated with Escherichia coli bacteria.
Third case of the season
This is already the third case since the start of the current bathing season in which elevated levels of microbiological pollution have been detected in Lake Saldus. The restrictions were introduced based on the results of the latest water analysis.
The decision by Latvia’s Health Inspectorate was reported by LSM English.

Search for the source of pollution
Representatives of the Saldus Municipality informed the inspectorate that they are checking the swimming area to identify possible sources of pollution. In particular, they are determining whether unauthorized wastewater is entering the lake.
They are also considering the possibility that pollution reaches the lake with water from the Vershada River. Latvia’s Health Inspectorate publishes current results of official water-quality checks at bathing sites.
