Moldova is investigating a large-scale cyberattack on citizens' medical data

A cyberattack has been reported in Moldova that affected about one-third of the healthcare system’s database, including citizens’ personal and payment information. Authorities suspect that Russia may be involved in the incident.

This was reported by TVR Moldova.

Representatives of the Moldovan Cybersecurity Agency stated that no ransom demands for the restoration of the compromised data have been received, so they do not rule out that the large-scale cyberattack could have been part of an operation linked to the Russian Federation’s intelligence services.

The agency’s deputy director, Ion Vintila, stated that several attacks on critical infrastructure have been recorded in the country since the beginning of the year, but the most serious incident involved a medical database.

According to him, over the past month, a large platform that consolidates information from regional and central hospitals—including financial transactions and patients’ personal data—was attacked. Approximately 30% of the data was compromised as a result of the attack.

The agency suspects that the actions may have been well-planned and aimed at stealing Moldova’s confidential data.

Currently, the Prosecutor General’s Office and the country’s police have reported that they have not yet received any official statements regarding this incident.

The Ministry of Health and the National Health Insurance Company are expected to provide additional information regarding the institutions that may have been affected by the attack.

The German government believes that Russia may be involved in phishing attacks targeting politicians, diplomats, military personnel, and journalists.

German domestic intelligence and cybersecurity agencies previously reported an increase in attacks on messaging app users. According to their assessments, the operations may have been carried out by entities linked to the state level.

The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office also confirmed that an investigation into attacks on the Signal messaging app has been ongoing since mid-April. Specific details of the case have not yet been disclosed.
