Moldova will significantly tighten its smoking regulations

Starting June 24, new smoking restrictions will take effect in Moldova, significantly expanding the list of public places where the use of conventional cigarettes, e-cigarettes, and other nicotine-containing products will be prohibited.

Under the new rules, smoking will be prohibited at sports facilities, around swimming pools, on beaches, at water parks, at public transportation stops, and in underground walkways.

A rule regarding the distance from public buildings is also being introduced. Smoking will be prohibited within 10 meters of entrances, open windows, or ventilation systems of public buildings.

Lawmakers paid special attention to apartment buildings. From now on, the ban will apply to entryways, hallways, and other common areas, as well as elevators, apartment balconies, and dormitory balconies and rooms.

In addition, the government is introducing a ban on nicotine pouches, including products containing synthetic nicotine.

Stricter product safety requirements are being introduced for e-cigarettes, and rules regarding consumer information on potential health risks are being strengthened.

Fines are imposed for violations of the new regulations.

For legal entities, the fine is up to 15,000 lei, and certain types of activities may be restricted for up to one year.

For individuals: a fine of up to 2,250 lei, or 40–60 hours of community service.

As a reminder, about 70% of French people believe that electronic cigarettes, or so-called vapes, should be banned in “smoke-free zones.”
