Trump Threatens to Withhold Aid from NATO Countries

U.S. President Donald Trump stated that the United States may refuse to provide support to NATO countries in response to the Alliance member states’ unwillingness to back a U.S. military operation in Iran.

The White House chief articulated his tough stance during an official press conference in the Oval Office, emphasizing his deep disappointment with the actions of key European partners.

The American leader stressed that his country has been investing enormous resources in the security of the European continent for years.

According to the U.S. president, Washington spends hundreds of millions of dollars to protect European countries from potential aggression by Russia, yet receives no reciprocity at critical moments.

Donald Trump expressed outrage that allies refused to align with the U.S. position on the Middle East.

The U.S. president specifically mentioned the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany, naming them among the countries that have treated U.S. interests poorly.

“We spent all that money. And then, when we might need help with minor issues… They say, ‘No, we’d rather not help,’” Trump said.

The White House chief considers this stance by European leaders to be completely unacceptable and irresponsible with regard to the strategic partnership.

The U.S. president made it clear that the American side is prepared to take similar steps and review its defense commitments to the Alliance.

“That’s a stupid statement, because we can say the same thing to them if we want to, and we might just do that,” he added.

The U.S. president made these remarks during a press conference in the Oval Office.
