A new type of combat drone exploded in Moldova for the first time
A combat drone exploded in southern Moldova near the village of Krokmaz. Police stated that this type of drone had not previously been detected in the country. Debris damaged the roofs and outbuildings of several houses, but no one was injured.
The drone crashed in a wooded area outside the village. According to law enforcement officials, the drone crashed into a tree and exploded at a height of approximately 2.5 meters. A fire broke out after the explosion. Debris scattered over a considerable distance and damaged the roofs and outbuildings of several residential homes.
Despite the explosion and property damage, there are no reports of injuries.
Police describe an unusual type of drone
At the site of the explosion, experts found debris from the drone. Police noted that its characteristics resemble those of a guided missile. Law enforcement officials speculate that it may have been a so-called “missile drone.” However, the police emphasized that no aircraft of this type had previously been identified on Moldovan territory.
Experts are currently determining where the drone came from and under what circumstances it entered Moldovan airspace. Work is also underway to examine the debris.
Sandu Warns of Threat to Civilians
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the violation of the country’s airspace following the explosion near Crocmaz. According to her, this incident is a direct consequence of Russia’s war against Ukraine and indicates a growing danger to people in the region.
Sandu emphasized that the risk to the civilian population is real and continues to grow. The Moldovan president called for an end to attacks that endanger people and could have consequences beyond Ukraine’s borders.
News of a powerful explosion near Krokmaz broke on the afternoon of August 9. Later, the Stefan-Voda District Council published photographs of an object resembling a drone that had crashed on the outskirts of the village. Moldovan experts are currently working to determine the origin of the device and all the circumstances surrounding how it ended up on the country’s territory, according to the Moldovan police.
