87-Year-Old Man Appears in Court in Nigeria Charged With Attacking Judge With a Machete

In Nigeria, 87-year-old Dahiru Garba appeared before the Chief Magistrate Court in Yola, Adamawa State, charged with attacking a judge with a machete during a court hearing. The court ordered that he remain in custody at the Yola Correctional Facility until a further hearing.

Case circumstances

According to Premium Times Nigeria, the incident occurred on August 31 at the Mayo-Ine court in the Fufore Local Government Area. Police said Garba, a resident of Korawa village, allegedly attacked Judge Dauda Hamman during the hearing of a case involving him and another man, Ismail Yusuf.

According to law enforcement, Garba struck the judge several times on the arm with a machete, causing him serious injuries. The suspect was detained after the incident. On September 4, the case was transferred from the police station in Fufore to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Yola for further investigation and prosecution.

Court proceedings

Following the investigation, Garba was brought before Chief Magistrate Court I in Yola, presided over by Chief Magistrate Ismail Shelleng. He was charged with one count of causing grievous bodily harm under Section 219 of the Adamawa State Criminal Code of 2018.

When the charge was read and explained to Garba, he pleaded guilty. The publication reports that he expressed regret and explained his actions by the influence of the devil. Superintendent of Police Zakka Musa prosecuted the case on behalf of Commissioner of Police Kabir Hassan. Hassan said the police would diligently pursue the case to ensure justice.
