In Nigeria, Governor Uba Sani approves implementation of salary agreement for KASU
In Nigeria’s Kaduna State, Governor Uba Sani has approved the implementation of the 2025 salary agreement between the federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for academic staff at Kaduna State University (KASU). The terms are due to take effect in October 2026, Premium Times Nigeria reports.
The decision was made amid a labour dispute between the state authorities and the ASUU chapter at KASU. According to the outlet, the conflict over unresolved staff demands escalated from a warning strike into an indefinite one.
Terms of the agreement
The state Commissioner for Education, Professor Abubakar Sambo, said the decision was based on the recommendations of a nine-member negotiating committee established by the governor. The approved package provides for a revised consolidated salary structure for university academic staff, an academic tools allowance, and other adjustments to payments and allowances.
The union’s demands included implementing 25% and 35% pay adjustments, university autonomy, arrears of promotion-related payments, pension contributions, death benefits, and group life insurance. In August, the ASUU chapter at KASU issued a two-week ultimatum to the state authorities and university management, after which it began a warning strike.

Payments and staff departures
Before approving the salary agreement, Sani also authorized a one-off payment of 300 million Nigerian naira in academic allowances for KASU staff. The state government said this was part of measures to clear payment and allowance arrears of more than 800 million naira accumulated since 2016.
ASUU-KASU stated that more than 200 professors and other academic staff had left the university, linking this to working conditions and delays in implementing the 2025 agreement. The university management and state government denied that the departures were on such a scale. According to the government, 59 academic staff, including 17 professors and associate professors, left KASU from January 2024 to August 2026.
KASU Vice-Chancellor Professor Abdullahi Ibrahim-Musa said that over the past three years, the government had allocated more than 800 million naira to pay withheld salaries, as well as 146 million naira for unpaid funds under the SIWES programme and other allowances. According to him, the university also received more than 200 million naira in current funding in 2026.
