Nigeria launches $1 billion social protection program
A $1 billion Household Prosperity and Empowerment Social Protection Project (HOPE-SP) was presented in Abuja. The event took place in the banquet hall of the State House with the participation of Nigeria’s First Lady Remi Tinubu.
The program’s launch was reported in a Premium Times Nigeria column by journalist Festus Adedayo. The author links the new initiative to the consequences of the removal of petrol subsidies, which President Bola Tinubu announced, according to him, three years and three months ago.
Opposition criticism
Adedayo writes that opposition politicians Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi criticized the program, considering it a delayed response to the population’s hardships. In his column, he also conveys the position of administration critics, who link the rising cost of living to the removal of fuel subsidies, the devaluation of the naira, and tax changes.

The author uses an allegory about a tortoise that opened a grain store only after a prolonged famine. In his view, one-off cash payments or food distribution cannot replace systemic policies to combat poverty and high inflation.
Transport plans
That same week, the administration reported that state governors were to soon introduce lower transport fares across the country. To achieve this, they plan to use compressed natural gas transport and electric vehicles.
As the columnist notes, these plans are to be supported by a network of 1,000 filling stations and the conversion of more than 120,000 vehicles. Supporters of the government call such steps a response to public hardship, while opponents, according to the author’s account, demand faster and long-term support mechanisms.
