In Germany, a lightning strike effectively split the city in two
In the Bavarian town of Harburg, a lightning strike knocked out the barriers at two railroad crossings. The malfunction disrupted traffic, effectively splitting the town into two parts. Emergency services worked to restore the systems.
According to law enforcement officials, the affected roads are the only direct connections between the western and eastern parts of Harburg, and it is now impossible to drive through them.
Residents now have to take a detour of several kilometers, and road crews were working Wednesday morning to set up detour routes.
It is not yet known when the damage will be repaired. Police reported that traffic disruptions could last until the morning rush hour.
A technical specialist from Deutsche Bahn has been notified, but repairs may take some time due to numerous other malfunctions caused by weather conditions.
Until then, the railroad crossing gates will remain closed. Police also warned drivers not to use unofficial detour routes or attempt to drive through lowered railroad crossing gates.
