Germany has reported new account freezes targeting Russian citizens

A number of German banks have frozen the accounts of Russian citizens, demanding proof of their right to permanent residence in Germany.

This was reported by Deutsche Welle.

According to the publication, some customers only found out about the freeze after they were unable to use their bank cards. In some cases, it took several weeks to unfreeze the accounts.

As DW notes, the banks explain these actions as checks related to compliance with financial control requirements, particularly following Russia’s inclusion on the list of high-risk countries regarding money laundering and terrorist financing.

At the same time, some customers complain that the restrictions have even affected those who have lived in Germany for many years and hold local documents.
