Syrian man charged in Germany with aiding attack at Holocaust Memorial
Germany’s Federal Prosecutor General has charged Syrian citizen Khalaf A. with aiding and abetting attempted murder and inflicting dangerous bodily harm in connection with the knife attack at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post, citing a statement from the prosecutor’s office.
According to the agency, the indictment was filed on August 21, 2026, after prosecutors concluded that they had sufficient evidence to suspect the man. Khalaf A. has been in custody since May 27.
The prosecution’s version
According to the Federal Prosecutor General’s Office, Khalaf A. spent the afternoon with the attacker, Wassim Al M., helped him plan the attack and encouraged him to carry it out. The case against Al M. was considered separately.

The prosecution alleges that Al M. attacked a man with a knife in the Field of Stelae at the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in Berlin-Mitte. The victim sustained life-threatening injuries. According to the agency’s statement, the attacker acted out of radical Islamist and antisemitic motives.
Sentence for the attacker
On March 5, 2026, the Berlin Higher Regional Court found Wassim Al M. guilty of attempted murder and inflicting dangerous bodily harm and sentenced him to 13 years in prison. The verdict has not yet become final.
The victim was a 30-year-old tourist from Bilbao, Spain. He was taken to hospital with severe neck injuries, underwent surgery and spent some time in a medically induced coma. The man later survived.
