A 33-year-old Ukrainian man was detained in Germany on suspicion of espionage
A 33-year-old Ukrainian citizen has been arrested in Germany on suspicion of gathering information about a defense company in Bavaria on behalf of a foreign intelligence service. This was reported by the Munich Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.
According to the investigation, in June 2026, the man, allegedly acting as a “low-level agent,” photographed the premises of the Bavarian defense contractor to prepare for possible sabotage and passed the collected materials on to his client.
The suspect was detained on August 2 in the federal state of Thuringia by officers from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office and local police. The following day, a court in Munich issued an arrest warrant, after which the man was placed in a pretrial detention center in Bavaria.
He is charged with espionage aimed at carrying out acts of sabotage under Section 87 of the German Criminal Code.
The prosecutor’s office did not specify which specific state or intelligence service the suspect may have been acting on behalf of, according to the investigation. Due to the ongoing investigation, law enforcement officials are not disclosing any further details.
It is noted that the arrest was the result of cooperation between law enforcement agencies and intelligence services within the framework of the recently established Joint Center for Countering Hybrid Threats (GAZ-Hybrid).
