Sausage sales decline in Germany, but 93% of households buy meat — Deutsche Welle
In Germany, 93% of households buy meat, but sales of sausage products are declining. Data from a study timed to coincide with World Vegetarian Day on October 1 show that the total volume of meat purchased has not decreased, Deutsche Welle English reports.
Sausages are bought less often
The decline was recorded specifically in the sausage segment: fewer people are buying them, and total sales of these products have fallen. At the same time, the study’s authors do not view these figures as evidence of Germans’ mass transition to vegetarianism or veganism.
According to the authors, consumers are rather paying closer attention to their diet and trying to reduce meat consumption without giving it up entirely.

Chicken is more popular than pork
About 43% of surveyed meat eaters agreed that it would be better for them to consume less meat. Another 27% said they hope to buy fewer meat products in the future.
Chicken is the most popular type of meat, followed by pork. At the same time, plant-based meat substitutes are also gaining popularity: they are purchased by about 35% of households.
