Fire breaks out at hospital during operation in Pakistan

A fire broke out in an operating room during a surgical procedure at Sheikh Zayed Medical College Hospital in Rahim Yar Khan, Pakistan, on Saturday morning. Due to smoke, medical staff stopped the procedure and moved the patient to a safe place, Dawn reports.

According to the outlet, electrical wiring caught fire in one of the operating rooms, and smoke spread through the premises. The incident caused panic among patients and hospital staff.

Hospital focal person and Deputy Medical Superintendent Rana Ilyas Ahmed said the fire was caused by a short circuit. According to him, staff responded immediately and extinguished the fire using firefighting equipment. Security personnel, doctors and paramedics took part in putting out the fire.

Investigation into the causes

District Commissioner Zahir Anwar Jappa instructed Assistant Commissioner Abdul Hannan Khan to determine the cause of the fire and submit a detailed report on the circumstances of the incident.

Afterward, the commissioner held a meeting with district administration officials, the head of the district health department and representatives of other relevant agencies. They were instructed to regularly inspect firefighting equipment, emergency response mechanisms, staff training, sanitary conditions and other organizational measures at public hospitals in the district.
