Wall collapses during ceremony in Peshawar, Pakistan, police officer injured
In Peshawar, Pakistan, a police officer was injured after a recently built wall collapsed during an opening ceremony for a project to modernize the city’s main routes. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi attended the event.

The law enforcement officer had been assigned to provide security at the ceremony, Dawn reports. According to a police representative, the wall collapsed due to a crowd gathering. The injured police officer was taken to hospital.
The wall had been built to install a plaque for the project’s opening ceremony. After speaking at the event, Sohail Afridi left the scene.

Road projects in Peshawar
The ceremony concerned road projects under the 200 billion Pakistani rupee Peshawar Restoration Plan. The chief minister also attended a separate ceremony marking the start of construction of an underpass at the Pishtakhara Chowk intersection.
According to Dawn, roof and building collapses occur frequently in Pakistan, including due to inadequate safety standards and the use of poor-quality construction materials. Last month, a woman died in Peshawar’s Naguman area when a roof collapsed during heavy rains. In July, at least eight people were injured in the city in roof and wall collapses caused by torrential rain and strong winds.
