US House of Representatives introduces resolution on Taekwondo Grandmasters Appreciation Day
In the United States, two members of the House of Representatives have introduced a resolution supporting the proclamation of September 4 this year as Taekwondo Grandmasters Appreciation Day. The document was submitted by Republican Brian Fitzpatrick and Democrat Madeleine Dean, the Korea Herald reports.

The resolution states that taekwondo and its grandmasters provide many people in the United States with numerous physical and mental benefits. The document includes language under which the House of Representatives expresses its support for Taekwondo Grandmasters Appreciation Day.
The resolution was introduced in the lower chamber of the US Congress on Thursday. Its authors are representatives from Pennsylvania: Fitzpatrick of the Republican Party and Dean of the Democratic Party.

Date and principles of taekwondo
In 2008, South Korea designated September 4 as International Taekwondo Day. The date was chosen to commemorate the fact that taekwondo became an Olympic sport on September 4, 1994.
The resolution also notes that taekwondo focuses on mental discipline and character building. The principles of this martial art include courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control, and indomitable spirit.
The rank of grandmaster, the document says, is intended for taekwondo practitioners of the highest level, with the greatest experience and recognition. According to data cited in the resolution, taekwondo is practiced worldwide by 80 million people of different ages and backgrounds.
