In South Africa, imprisoned Khomotso Madiba withdraws bail application

In South Africa, imprisoned Khomotso Madiba, who has been charged with escaping from lawful custody at the Rooigrond Correctional Centre, has withdrawn his application for release on bail. He appeared before the Molopo Magistrate's Court on Monday. Madiba remained in custody, and the case was postponed until October 1.

Possible consolidation of cases

As TimesLIVE reports, the case was postponed for further investigation and the possible consolidation of charges. South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Lindiwe Mabhaba said that at the time of his latest escape, Madiba was already involved in a separate case concerning escape from lawful custody. Both cases are scheduled to be heard on October 1.

Escape and rearrest

According to the Department of Correctional Services, Madiba was being held in a single cell when he managed to escape from the correctional centre on September 6. He was rearrested on September 9.

Madiba is serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted of robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of a firearm and ammunition, kidnapping, and violating parole conditions. According to Mabhaba, the prosecution considers the circumstances of the two escape-from-custody cases serious and intends to seek their thorough consideration in court.
