Poland has officially recognized same-sex marriage for the first time

On Wednesday, May 14, the first same-sex marriage in the country’s history was officially registered in the Polish capital. The couple, both Polish citizens, had married in Berlin back in 2018. Their union has now been officially recognized in their home country.

This was reported by TVP.

Two men from Poland got married in the German capital in 2018. On May 14, their marriage was entered into the Polish civil registry.

“This morning, we carried out the first transcription of a same-sex marriage certificate in accordance with court rulings,” said Warsaw Mayor Rafał Trzaskowski.

Same-sex marriages are not officially permitted in Poland. However, last year the European Court of Justice ruled that EU countries must recognize same-sex marriages entered into in accordance with the laws of other member states.

Following this, in March 2026, Poland’s Supreme Administrative Court ordered the Warsaw Registry Office to register the marriage of two Polish citizens.

Stefanchukdenied that the draft of the new Civil Code restricts the rights of LGBT people.

Stefanchuk explained the introduction of the term “public decency” in the Civil Code.

No one really needs the new Civil Code

The Civil Code needs to be revised; otherwise, there will be more misunderstandings
