A farmer who plowed up fresh asphalt on a road was detained in Poland
In southwestern Poland, a farmer drove his tractor onto freshly laid asphalt and damaged about 200 meters of the road. He was stopped by construction workers, after which the police detained him. The farmer has been in conflict with city authorities for several years and claims that part of this road belongs to him.
The incident occurred on Friday afternoon in Ostrop, near Gliwice. The man drove onto the new asphalt in an Ursus tractor. He attached a plow to the tractor and used it to damage approximately 200 meters of the freshly laid road surface.
Construction workers saw what was happening and tried to stop the man. They positioned their equipment so that the tractor could not continue. “Construction workers stopped him from causing further damage to the roadway by positioning their equipment in such a way that he could not continue driving. Police officers arrived at the scene and caught the man in the act,” said Senior Commissioner Mazena Shved of the Gliwice Municipal Police Department.
On Saturday, the farmer is scheduled to be questioned at the Gliwice-West District Prosecutor’s Office. Law enforcement officials are working to determine all the circumstances of the incident.
The farmer claims that the road
According to the local website 24gliwice.pl, the man has been in conflict with city authorities for many years. He claims that the section of the road where repairs began belongs to him. However, city authorities deny this.
The Gliwice Municipal Roads Department issued a separate statement following the incident. They emphasized that Rybacka Street in Ostrop is entirely owned by the city. “The road is entirely owned by the city of Gliwice. It is not a private road, nor is it a road with any part owned by a private individual,” the Municipal Road Authority stated.
They also refuted the assumption that the road repairs allegedly could not have been carried out without the farmer’s consent. “It is also untrue to suggest that the lack of consent from a private owner affected the repairs or the laying of the asphalt pavement,” the department added.
Residents Had Been Waiting Years for Road Repairs
Katazhina Kuchynska-Budka, the mayor of Gliwice, posted a video of the incident. She emphasized that local residents had been waiting for this road to be repaired for many years. Now, the newly laid pavement will have to be repaired due to the farmer’s actions.
Law enforcement officials are continuing to investigate the situation. It remains to be determined why the man decided to damage the road and whether he actually had any legal grounds to consider it his property. This was reported by the Polish police, according to RMF24.
The Polish Ministry of the Interior called the statements by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party regarding the possible deportation of Ukrainian men of draft age “populist.”
