Rome closes Colosseum’s second level after worker’s death — Asharq Al-Awsat

In Rome, Italy, the second level of the Colosseum was closed to visitors after a worker died inside the landmark overnight. Asharq Al-Awsat reports, citing a statement by Italy’s Ministry of Culture.

Investigation into the circumstances

The deceased was Andrea Moretti, a specialist in high-altitude work using rope access. The ministry said he died as a result of a workplace accident at the Flavian Amphitheatre, another name for the Colosseum.

Police are establishing the circumstances of the incident. The Ministry of Culture provided no further details about the accident.

Closure of part of the landmark

The Colosseum Archaeological Park decided to close for one day the section of the second level where the incident occurred as a sign of mourning. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli expressed condolences over the death of the young worker.

The Colosseum, built in the 1st century, is the largest amphitheatre in the world. In ancient times, it hosted animal hunts and gladiatorial fights, and the structure could accommodate about 50,000 spectators. During periods of the highest tourist influx, up to 20,000 people visit the landmark per day.
