A woman in critical condition was hospitalized in Russia due to a rare tropical bacterium
Russia has officially confirmed an imported case of melioidosis—an extremely dangerous tropical disease that affects the human body’s internal organs and systems.
The infected patient is currently in a medical facility under the supervision of doctors.
The main cause of the infection was visiting tourist attractions while on vacation abroad.
The patient is a Russian tourist who recently returned from a vacation in Thailand. During her trip, the woman actively participated in various recreational activities, including a visit to a local elephant farm.
Due to a sudden deterioration in her health, the traveler was hospitalized immediately upon returning home.
“An imported case of melioidosis has been registered in the Russian Federation in a tourist who returned from Thailand, where she participated in various excursions, including a visit to an elephant farm. She is currently hospitalized in serious condition,” the press service of Rospotrebnadzor reported.
The causative agent of this dangerous infection is the specific bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei. In the natural environment, this pathogen typically inhabits the soil near plant roots in countries with tropical climates.
Human infection most often occurs as a result of direct contact between exposed skin and contaminated soil. The highest concentration of bacteria on the surface is observed after heavy rains or destructive storms.
In addition to contact transmission, medical experts identify airborne droplet transmission, as well as infection through contaminated water or food.
The possibility of transmission from infected wild or domestic animals cannot be ruled out either. The disease is extremely severe and is accompanied by the formation of numerous purulent abscesses in various parts of the body.
