One person has died in Romania due to severe thunderstorms, and there is widespread flooding

Severe thunderstorms that struck Romania on the evening of June 30 caused widespread damage, localized power outages, and flooding in 20 counties across the country, including the capital, Bucharest. 

One person died as a result of the storm, and emergency services received thousands of calls.

Due to strong winds and heavy rain across Romania, trees and structures fell, buildings and cars were damaged, roofs were torn off, and widespread power outages were reported.

In Ilfov County, which includes Bucharest, one person died after a tree fell on a car.

The Romanian capital was hit the hardest, with emergency services receiving about 2,000 calls.

In the city, streets turned into rivers, cars were trapped in floodwaters, several metro stations were flooded, and traffic was partially paralyzed.

Bucharest Mayor Ciprian Cucu called the situation unprecedented.

“Severe weather can cause problems in any major city, especially when a large amount of precipitation falls in a short period of time, he noted.

Earlier, heavy downpours, squalls, and hail struck a number of regions in Ukraine, causing significant damage to agriculture and infrastructure. In Ukraine, crops and farms were affected by the severe weather; in particular, in the Cherkasy region, floodwaters washed away watermelon seedlings and damaged irrigation systems. In other regions, there have been reports of fallen trees, localized flooding, and power outages. Meteorologists warn that unstable weather conditions may persist.

After several hot days, severe weather hit parts of western Ukraine. Heavy downpours accompanied by thunderstorms occurred, in particular, in the Lviv and Volyn regions.
