Romania scrambled F-16 fighter jets in response to an aerial target near the border with Ukraine
On the morning of July 27, an aerial target was detected in Romania near the border with Ukraine. In response, the military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets, and residents of Tulcea County were alerted to a potential threat.
According to the ministry, the Ministry of Defense’s radar surveillance system detected an aerial target east of the city of Sulina. At 8:53 a.m., two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled from the 86th Air Base in Fetești to monitor the situation.
The National Military Command Center also notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations of the need to alert the public. At 08:47, residents of Tulcea County received an emergency RO-Alert notification.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the aerial target remained in Romanian airspace for a short time before crossing the border and heading toward Ukraine.
“The target remained in national airspace for a short time, after which it crossed the border, heading toward Ukraine. Reports of explosions on Ukrainian territory were received shortly thereafter,” the ministry stated.
The Romanian Ministry of Defense added that it will release additional information once the investigation is complete and new data is available.

As a reminder, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the ambassador of the Russian Federation, the aggressor state, over repeated violations of the country’s airspace by drones. This occurred after Romanian fighter jets shot down a drone—the third in the last three days—that had violated Romania’s airspace.
