A drone that crossed the border between the two countries crashed in Romania

On Saturday, September 12, a drone was discovered in Romania after it crashed in a cornfield near the village of Botoșenița Mare in Suceava County. Prior to that, the drone had crossed the airspace of Ukraine and Moldova.

According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, the Air Operations Centers of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova notified Romania about the drone, which had crossed the airspace of both countries and was heading toward northeastern Romania.

“On Saturday, September 12, the Air Operations Centers of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova informed the Romanian Ministry of National Defense that a drone had crossed the airspace of both countries and was heading toward northeastern Romania,” the ministry’s statement said.

To monitor the situation, two F-16 fighter jets from the Romanian Air Force took off from the 86th Air Base in Borcha.

At around 4:20 p.m., a RO-ALERT warning was issued in Botoșani County. At approximately the same time, emergency services received a report of a drone over the village of Stubien.

Subsequently, a crashed object was discovered in a cornfield near Botoșenița Mare.

The crash caused a small fire and created a crater approximately one meter in diameter and about 30 centimeters deep.

According to preliminary reports, there were no casualties.

A team of explosive ordnance disposal specialists was dispatched to the crash site. They are to assess the situation and the safety of the object.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway, and experts are determining the drone’s origin and the circumstances of its crash.

The Romanian Ministry of National Defense reported the incident.

As a reminder, on the morning of August 30, an air raid alert was declared in part of Tulcea County, Romania, due to an unidentified aerial target near the border with Ukraine. To monitor the situation, the Romanian military scrambled two F-16 fighter jets.

On the evening of Monday, August 24, Romania scrambled two F-18 fighter jets from the Spanish Air and Space Forces after detecting two aerial targets moving toward the Romanian border.
