In Sweden, a bridge on the E45 shifted 50 centimetres after a truck incident — The Local Sweden

In Sweden, the Strömsund Bridge on the E45 road was completely closed after an incident involving heavy special transport. The structure shifted sideways and rose by 50 centimetres, The Local Sweden reports.

Traffic diverted

The Swedish Transport Administration said that the bridge would remain closed for some time due to the scale of the damage. Traffic from the E45 was diverted.

Emergency services representative Joakim Kastemir told the newspaper Aftonbladet that no one was being allowed onto the bridge. According to him, the structure sustained significant damage and its restoration will take time.

Truck remained on the bridge

Rescuers were called at around 23:30 on Tuesday when heavy special transport was crossing the bridge. The driver was able to leave the vehicle and safely get off the bridge, but the truck itself remained on the structure.

The Strömsund Bridge is about 70 years old. Over the past five years, it was reconstructed in several stages, including to increase the structure's capacity to withstand heavy transport. Following the upgrade, vehicles weighing up to 74 tonnes were permitted to use the 332-metre bridge.
