In Venezuela, the death toll from the earthquakes has risen, and rescue efforts are ongoing

The death toll from a series of powerful earthquakes in Venezuela has risen to 2,595. This was announced by the country’s interim acting president, Delcy Rodríguez.

During a press conference, she stated that as of today, the deaths of 2,595 people have been confirmed

However, she did not provide details on the number of people missing. According to local media reports, approximately 38,500 people may be considered missing.

Delsi Rodríguez rejected accusations that the government had allegedly responded too slowly to the aftermath of the natural disaster.

“This was a natural tragedy on a scale we could not have imagined, even though we knew that a seismic event could occur in our country,” she emphasized.

According to the head of state, the search-and-rescue operation is ongoing, and rescuers have not lost hope of finding people alive.

“We can still find people alive,” Rodríguez noted.

Earlier, official reports indicated 2,295 dead and 11,267 injured, but the death toll continues to rise as the rubble is cleared.

A series of earthquakes measuring 7.2, 7.5, and 4.5 on the Richter scale struck last Wednesday evening local time and Thursday morning. The state of La Guaira in northern Venezuela suffered the most damage.

Emergency and rescue services are currently continuing their work in the affected areas, while authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and the needs of the population.

This was reported by CNBC.

Prior to this, an international rescue team in Venezuela successfully rescued Hernán Gil, who had been trapped under the rubble of a building for eight days following the double earthquake that struck on June 24.
