In Vietnam, a former lawmaker was not held accountable following a fatal traffic accident

Vietnamese authorities explained their decision not to bring criminal charges against former National Assembly deputy Nguyen Si Quang following a fatal traffic accident in Hanoi by stating that the victim’s family did not insist on criminal prosecution. Channel NewsAsia reported this, citing AFP.

The accident occurred on May 30, 2025, on a street in Vietnam’s capital. According to the state-run VTV television channel, Nguyen Si Quang struck an 18-year-old girl and her father, after which the car crashed into a tree. The girl died, and her father, Do Viet Hung, was injured.

On television, police stated that the investigation determined the accident occurred because the driver veered into oncoming traffic. Prosecutor Ngo Hong Son reported that the driver had a valid license, no alcohol was detected in his system, and he met the criteria for exemption from criminal prosecution.

Hanoi Deputy Police Chief Nguyen Dinh Long stated that the former parliamentarian admitted to his actions and took steps to address the consequences of the accident. According to him, the victim’s family filed a statement waiving criminal prosecution. The father of the deceased, who appeared in a VTV report with his face concealed, stated that the family has no complaints about the investigators’ work.

News of the accident only gained traction on social media in recent weeks. Users, in particular, speculated that the driver might have been intoxicated; however, VTV reported that no alcohol was found in his system. Some users also reported that their posts had been deleted, and flowers left at the crash site were quickly removed. Following the state television broadcast, a new wave of criticism emerged online regarding the decision not to press charges.

Nguyen Si Quang previously served as vice chairman of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs Committee. His wife is Vietnam’s Minister of Culture, Sports, and Tourism.
