Voting has begun in Armenia's parliamentary elections

Official voting in Armenia's special parliamentary elections began on Sunday, June 7. 

The country’s citizens are electing a new composition of the highest legislative body amid intense political competition. 

Polling stations across Armenia, numbering over 2,000 in total, opened at 8 a.m. local time. 

Voting will continue until 8 p.m., after which the vote count will begin. Preliminary results are expected to be announced shortly after midnight.

Sixteen parties and two electoral blocs are competing for representation in parliament. The threshold for the former is 4%, and for the latter, 8%. 

According to the republic’s current legislation, there must be at least 101 deputies and at least three political parties in parliament.

The electoral process is marked by a high level of involvement from international and domestic monitoring institutions. 

According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, approximately 2,485,000 people are eligible to vote in this election. During the election, 13 local observation missions with nearly 2,700 observers will be at work.

This was reported by the Armenian service of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (“Radio Azatutyun”).

Yerevan has stated that it may resort to tough measures if the price of Russian gas rises. Parliament Speaker Alen Simonyan noted that the country would consider withdrawing from the CSTO and the EAEU if Russia takes such a step.

Armenia has appealed to the EU to send a rapid response team to counter Russian influence.

The Armenian opposition proposed creating a “Ministry of Sex” to promote women’s happiness.

According to the Foreign Intelligence Service, the launch of the TRIPP route between the U.S. and Armenia diminishes Russia’s role as the main player in the South Caucasus. The new corridor will connect Asia and Europe via Armenia and Azerbaijan without Moscow’s involvement.
