Hungary is investigating subsidies for BYD following Szijjártó's appointment
Hungary has launched an investigation into state subsidies granted to BYD, a Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer. The probe concerns the company where former Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has taken a job, according to European Truth, citing Euronews.
Szijjártó’s employment has raised concerns about a potential conflict of interest, as he participated in negotiations regarding state support for the automaker while serving in the government. Prime Minister Péter Magyar stated that all of Szijjártó’s decisions, negotiations, and government commitments related to BYD Hungary’s investments will be reviewed.
The investigation will also examine subsidies, tax breaks, and permits that large multinational companies received during Viktor Orbán’s administration. According to Magyar, the review will cover not only Szijjártó’s appointment at BYD but also his role in the previous government, where he was responsible for attracting foreign investment.
“We will determine who made these decisions, who prepared them, what professional concerns were ignored, and what burden they placed on Hungarian taxpayers, workers, local communities, and the environment,” Magyar stated.
BYD is building its first European plant in Szeged, which allows the company to avoid European Union import duties on Chinese electric vehicles. BYD’s expansion in Hungary has been criticized by environmental and human rights NGOs due to suspicions of non-compliance with standards.
On July 15, Szijjártó announced his resignation from parliament, citing an offer to serve as head of external relations and new business development at BYD. Fidesz stated that Viktor Orbán was aware of this decision and had personally discussed it with Szijjártó on two occasions.
