UKMTO reports incident involving merchant vessel in Strait of Hormuz

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) centre reported an incident involving a merchant vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, linked to ongoing military activity in the region.

UKMTO statement

In its alert, UKMTO said it had received information about a merchant vessel in the strategic strait that was involved in an interaction amid ongoing military activity in the region. This was reported by Anadolu Agency.

The centre did not identify the vessel, specify the nature of the interaction, or report any possible casualties. According to UKMTO, the competent authorities have been informed and relevant investigations are ongoing.

Recommendations for shipping

UKMTO advised seafarers to take into account current maritime security information and monitor changes in the operational situation.

The centre's report came several hours after a statement by U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). According to CENTCOM, U.S. forces destroyed five Iranian crude oil tankers after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched ballistic missiles at a U.S. Navy ship twice over the past two days. The command also said that the ship avoided the attacks, continued patrolling regional waters, and that U.S. military personnel were not injured.
