Ukrainians Rode on Turtles in Oman — Court Hands Down Sentence
In Oman, a court handed down a verdict against two Ukrainians accused of mistreating sea turtles in a nature reserve. The tourists touched the animals, climbed onto their shells, and picked up hatchlings that were just making their way along the beach.
The individuals in question are athlete Vadym Oliinyk and cosmetologist Olena Kravchenko. The court found them guilty of harming and disturbing the sea turtles that were in the nature reserve. The verdict was reported by The Times of Oman and an Italian conservationist who had been following the story. According to the publication, the Ukrainians were at one of Oman’s well-known sea turtle nesting sites. It was there that the tourists came into contact with the animals as they were laying their eggs.
Videos circulating on social media showed people climbing onto the shell of a sea turtle. They also picked up tiny hatchlings that had just emerged from their eggs and were making their way along the beach. When an adult turtle tried to leave, the tourists did not immediately let her go. In the video, they laughed and continued to interact with the animal.
After the footage began circulating widely on social media, Omani law enforcement took an interest in the situation. The case involved a possible violation of wildlife protection regulations. In addition to their treatment of the turtles, the court also considered the publication of the relevant content on Instagram. The Ukrainians were found guilty of using information technology to create and disseminate photos and videos that violate public order.
What punishment did the Ukrainians receive?
The court imposed a fine of 100 Omani rials on each of the tourists. This is approximately 200 euros. In addition, each was sentenced to one month of imprisonment. At the same time, the court combined the imposed sentences and suspended the prison terms. This means that, in practice, the Ukrainians will not have to serve this month in prison unless circumstances arise that would legally require the sentence to be enforced.
However, the court’s decision drew criticism from environmentalists. One of them stated that such a fine is not a sufficient deterrent for people who might repeat such behavior. “The amount is truly laughable, I know. What’s more, in my opinion, it sends a potentially dangerous message: ‘Oh, well, so if I go ahead and mistreat a sea turtle, I only risk paying 200 euros and maybe getting a month in prison? Who cares!”” the conservationist wrote.
He also emphasized that, in his view, such a punishment does not compel people to take the consequences of their actions more seriously. “A fine like this isn’t a good deterrent; rather, it leads people to underestimate the consequences. The stress endured by the turtle that went through this horrific experience, in my opinion, isn’t worth 200 euros. But I’m not a judge, so all I can do is shrug,” he noted. The conservationist added that he will continue to push for punishment in similar cases involving the mistreatment of wild animals.
How This Story Began
The incident came to light in late September. At that time, screenshots and videos from Ukrainian tourists’ vacation in Oman began circulating on social media. The footage showed people interacting with a sea turtle and her hatchlings. Specifically, they were climbing onto the animal’s shell and holding the tiny hatchlings in their hands.
These actions sparked outrage among social media users, especially since all of this took place at a well-known site where sea turtles lay their eggs and raise their young. After the incident gained attention, the photos and videos featuring the turtle were removed from the Instagram page. Vadym Oliinyk also apologized for his behavior. He stated that he had no intention of harming the animal.
Currently, his Instagram account is set to private for users who are not following him. The court case resulted in fines and a suspended sentence of one month in prison for both Ukrainians. At the same time, this story has drawn attention to the rules for interacting with wild animals and the responsibility of tourists in protected areas. This was reported by The Times of Oman and an Italian conservationist on the Biologicamente page.
Law enforcement officials and the Omani Environmental Protection Agency have launched an investigation into the Ukrainian tourists who rode a sea turtle in the Ras Al-Jinz protected area, held its hatchlings, and prevented the animal from escaping in order to film a video.
