The Czech government has not approved President Pavel's participation in the NATO summit
The Czech government has not yet decided whether President Petr Pavel will attend the NATO summit, which is scheduled to take place in Ankara in July. The head of state made this announcement following a cabinet meeting on June 8.
According to Pavel, he does not consider it appropriate or in accordance with the Constitution for the government to determine whether the president can participate in international events.
“The question is rather whether the government will create the organizational and administrative conditions for the president’s trip, or whether it will use these conditions to restrict the exercise of his powers,” he stated.
Prime Minister Andrej Babiš announced that the government will make a final decision on the composition of the delegation to the NATO summit on June 22.
At the same time, the government has approved Pavel’s participation as head of the Czech delegation to the UN General Assembly.
The dispute between the president and the government over the NATO summit has been ongoing for about two months. Some representatives of the governing coalition, including Foreign Minister Petr Maťinka, oppose Pavel’s participation.
The president has proposed a compromise: the prime minister and ministers will represent the Czech Republic during the official part of the summit, while he will participate only in informal discussions on European security and Alliance policy.
Earlier, Pavel stated that if the government refuses, he may appeal to the Constitutional Court, considering this a restriction of presidential powers.
