In Australia, a jury found 76-year-old former Catholic Bishop of Broome Christopher Alan Saunders guilty of sexually assaulting two Indigenous Australians. The charges involved 13 incidents, including one rape and 12 counts of sexual assault, committed between 2008 and 2019.
A jury in Western Australia found Saunders guilty on all 13 counts. According to the prosecution, the crimes took place over several years, including on properties belonging to the Catholic Church. According to the prosecution, the former bishop hosted parties involving alcohol on church premises. He invited young Indigenous Australians to these gatherings.
Investigators believe that this was how Saunders befriended the young men, after which he sexually assaulted them. One of the victims, whose name has not been disclosed, testified in court that he first met Saunders when he was 16 years old.
According to the man, the then-bishop regularly invited him to his home in Broome and gave him alcohol. Subsequently, the victim claimed, Saunders’ behavior became increasingly sexual in nature. At first, it involved kissing and touching of private parts, and later, he said, it escalated to rape.
Prosecutors cited abuse of influence
Prosecutors emphasized that Saunders had significantly more power and influence than the young men with whom he interacted. His position within the Catholic Church, according to the prosecution, allowed him to exploit the victims’ trust and create situations in which they found themselves in a vulnerable position.
Saunders himself denied all charges of sexual assault. His attorney, Tony Geiger, attempted to cast doubt on the complainants’ testimony. He drew the jury’s attention to the fact that some of them had a history of legal trouble, alcohol abuse, and drug use. According to the defense, this could have affected their ability to accurately recall the events. However, the jury returned guilty verdicts on all 13 counts.
Saunders was acquitted on some of the charges
At the same time, the trial did not result in a guilty verdict on all counts. The jury acquitted Saunders on six other counts. Another seven charges were dropped during the trial due to insufficient evidence. Thus, the court found 13 counts proven, while in the other cases there was insufficient evidence to support a guilty verdict.
Saunders led the diocese for over 20 years
Christopher Alan Saunders had led the Catholic Diocese of Bruma since 1996. Under his leadership were nine parishes and 13 schools. In 2020, he stepped down from his duties as bishop after allegations of sexual abuse became public.
The following year, Pope Francis accepted his resignation. Now, if the conviction stands after a possible appeal, Saunders could become the highest-ranking Catholic clergyman in Australia to be found guilty of sexual abuse committed while in ministry. At this time, the final sentence for the 76-year-old former bishop has yet to be determined by the court, according to The Guardian.
