Australia mistakenly flies two New Zealand flags on Flag Day
In Canberra, during an event marking the 125th anniversary of the first raising of the Australian flag, two New Zealand flags were mistakenly displayed among 44 flags over Capital Hill. As RNZ World reports, 42 Australian flags were raised instead of the planned 44, while the other two turned out to be New Zealand flags.
The flags were quickly replaced
The mistake was noticed, after which the two New Zealand flags were promptly replaced with Australian ones. The flags of the two countries look similar: both feature the Union Jack and stars, although their designs differ.

History of Flag Day
The Australian government noted that the country’s current flag was first raised above the dome of the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne on September 3, 1901. Since then, September 3 has been observed as Flag Day in Australia.
The flag design was selected from more than 32,000 entries. Rejected proposals included sketches of animals playing cricket with a winged ball and a kangaroo pointing a gun at the Southern Cross constellation. The Australian flag received official status in 1954. New Zealand adopted its own flag design, also featuring the Union Jack and stars, in 1902.
