Australian driver fined for inattentive driving: police say he was buttering a bagel at the wheel
In the Australian city of Toowoomba, a 29-year-old man was issued a fine of 1,104 Australian dollars and received three demerit points. Police said the driver was steering the car with his knees while buttering a bagel.
Incident in Toowoomba
As ABC News Australia reports, the incident occurred on Monday afternoon in the regional city of Toowoomba, Queensland. According to police, the Glenvale driver was spotted engaging in this behaviour in heavy traffic.
The man had a provisional driver's licence. In body-camera footage provided to the media by police, he said after being stopped that he understood the recklessness of his actions but was hungry. The driver also said that he had been working since the morning.

Grounds for the fine
The police officer also told the man that his vehicle was not registered. According to police, the driver was issued infringement notices for driving without due care and attention, as well as for operating an unregistered vehicle.
Acting Darling Downs District Superintendent Kelly Hanlen urged drivers not to become distracted while driving. According to her, even preparing food can have serious consequences if a driver takes their hands and attention away from operating a vehicle.
