A 13-year-old boy died in Spain during celebrations of the country’s victory at the 2026 World Cup. A fountain collapsed in the province of Salamanca, killing the child and injuring two other teenagers.
“A 13-year-old boy died when part of a fountain collapsed in the province of Salamanca in northwestern Spain during celebrations of the country’s victory at the World Cup,” the publication reports.
According to emergency services cited by the BBC, two other teenagers were injured, including one child who was taken to the hospital with a suspected broken leg.
People were celebrating Spain’s victory inside the “Arbol Gordo” fountain in the city of Ciudad Rodrigo (Salamanca province) when, at around 12:30 a.m. local time (11:30 p.m. British Summer Time) it partially collapsed.
“What was supposed to be a celebration of the Spanish national soccer team’s victory at the World Cup turned into a tragedy,” the Ciudad Rodrigo City Council wrote on social media.
The Castile and León Emergency Services reported receiving several calls regarding the fountain’s collapse. According to local media, part of the structure collapsed after several people climbed onto it to celebrate Spain’s victory.
